Where a Doorbell Goes at a Perth Front Door

Too high, too low or on the wrong surface and you get a picture of a forehead, a doormat, or a door that shakes every time it shuts.

The chime goes inside, somewhere you will hear it from the back of the house. That position matters nearly as much as the doorbell itself.

Why Wired Wins at a Perth Front Door

Battery doorbells are the easy ones to put up and the ones we get called back to. Three things go wrong with them here in particular.

Heat is hard on batteries
A west facing porch in February is a brutal place to keep a battery. Run time falls off long before the battery is actually old.
It sleeps to save power
A battery unit wakes on motion, and waking takes a moment. That moment is usually the part you wanted to see.
Charging is a job to remember
Wired means it is never flat in the week you needed it, which is the week it always seems to happen.

A gate station is a separate job to a doorbell, and usually the harder of the two to get cable out to.
Do I need existing doorbell wiring?

It helps but it is not essential. If there is a doorbell push at your front door there is usually low voltage wiring behind it running back to a chime, and that path can often be reused.

Where there is nothing, we run new cable through the roof space and down the wall or through the eave, the same way we run camera cable, so it stays out of sight.

Can the doorbell record to my camera system instead of the cloud?

With many wired units, yes. The doorbell is treated as another camera and records to the hard drive in your recorder, which means the footage lives at your house and there is no subscription attached to keeping it.

Some brands only record to their own cloud service, so we will tell you which is which before you choose.

Will it work if my front door is a long way from the modem?

That is exactly why we prefer wired. Distance and brick walls both weaken wifi, and a front door at the far end of a double brick house is often the worst spot on the property for signal.

A cabled doorbell is unaffected by the distance, because it is not relying on wifi to get its picture back.

Can I open my gate from the intercom?

Yes, if you have an automatic gate with a control board, the intercom can be wired to trigger it. Then you can let someone in from the panel inside the house or from your phone.

If your gate is manual, the intercom still handles the video and the conversation, but it cannot open the gate for you.

How do you get cable out to a front gate?

In conduit, along a path we agree with you first. That might be down the edge of the driveway, through a garden bed, or under paving.

Perth blocks commonly have limestone, reticulation and mature roots in the way, so the route gets worked out standing on your driveway rather than assumed from the kerb.

Can more than one person answer the door?

Yes. The app goes on as many phones in the household as you like, and everyone gets the alert. You can also have a panel inside the house so anyone home can answer without hunting for a phone.

Can I have a doorbell at the front door and an intercom at the gate?

Yes, and on a block with a locked front fence it is a common pairing. The gate station deals with anyone who cannot get in, and the doorbell covers whoever has already made it up to the house, like a neighbour or a courier you buzzed through.

Where both units support it, they can sit in the same app so you are not juggling two of them. We will also tell you when one station at the gate would do the whole job and save you the second install.

What if someone tries to pull the doorbell off the wall?

The unit is mounted with security fixings, so it does not come away with a pull.

More useful than that, if your doorbell records back to the recorder inside the house rather than only to itself, the footage of whoever did it is already indoors and out of their reach. That is one of the reasons we recommend units that can record to your own system.
